象牙果是南美赤道附近的一種名為TAGUA椰子樹的果實，常見於厄瓜多爾和秘魯的沿海雨林中。 罩胚乳有點像椰子，起初是液體，成熟以後變得堅硬起來，因為色澤外觀很像象牙，所以取名叫象牙果。
 
象牙果粒硬度適中，光澤柔和，紋理細膩，近聞有淡淡的菩提子香氣，較老件的象牙果作品會呈現淡黃色。象牙果作為飾品，在佛教上有廣泛的應用，具有菩提子的加持功效。在巴西人的認知中，象牙果本身就蘊含含著增強體質，消除疲勞，驅除病邪，常保平安等效果。
